Hong Kong Space Museum and Theatre: Location
I walked past the Hong Kong Space Museum a hundred times. Although the Lonely Planet doesn’t sound very enthusiastic about it (the museum looks very outdated and antiquated but still enjoyable for children) I decided to give it a shot.
The museum location is very convenient being roughly 5 minutes walk from Tsim Sha Tsui metro station (10 Salisbury Road) just in front of the prestigious Peninsula Hotel.
It’s also really impossible to miss it with that weird egg shaped facade !

I arrived at 3pm and I immediately threw up my hands in despair! The museum was closed for renovation [as for Aug 2018 is now open] ! . I was about to leave but then I realised that only the exhibition halls were closed. The planetarium was open as usual! The “Stanley Ho Space Theatre” offers 3 different shows at the moment: two about the space and one related to the Arctic. I went for the one I thought to be the most interesting, Deep Space.
Each show lasts from about 35 to 45 minutes. Tickets price starts at 24 HKD for the front seats up to 32 HKD for the regular seats.
Hong Kong Space Theatre: My Experience
“Dark Universe” is really worth watching, and looks awesome on the big planetarium 360° roof-screen. Audio commentary is available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and even Japanese so no worries about that. Although there is no proper 3D effect and no 3D glasses are provided , the short movie is perfectly crafted in order to provide a tridimensional feel.
All in all If you’re visiting Hong Kong during summer time you can have a rest here for half an hour and enjoy the shows, it’s an awesome experience. I’ll be back for sure to check out the proper museum once the renovation work is done!
